I cannot tell you how exciting it is to see this post!! (referring to the Farm Gate & Farm Gate + Info event, attached below)
And in politics, things move sloooooowwww! This meeting is the culmination of 12 years of advocacy lead by Area D and the RDCK, starting when I was the Food Security coordinator before we built the Food Hub.
It was 2007 when the meat inspection regulations changed so that on farm slaughter was illegal and all producers must head to a Federally approved facility. At the time, closest was Armstrong.
For years, i met with various ministries from health to agriculture, always with the support of the RDCK. In 2020, i was contacted with the news that Area D specifically was going to be permitted the ability to do farm gate sales, again. Despite a decade later and losing most of our producers, this was good news. Two years later and a few more meetings with ministries and the amazing research of Abra Brynne and the Food Policy Council, we advocated for Slocan, rural Creston, south Salmo and Pass Creek area. A few months later, the province announced the full slate of farm gate licensing across the province!!Little voices, when consistent, can make a difference.
Go farmers go!!!Thank you Chelsey, LINKS, Abra, Andy Shadrack who first took this to the RDCK board and ALL of our farmers who are hanging on so we can eat healthy, sustainable food.
A shout out to our Minister of Ag – Lana Popham as well, thank you for listening to our rural farmers.
